The Teachers Who Make Magic program recognizes 24 teachers to receive the award each year, sponsored by the New Jersey Education Association. This year, PHS teacher Graciela Elia was one of these recipients.
Teachers can be nominated for this award by superintendents, principals, co-workers, or parents. After the nomination period, the Teachers Who Make Magic Committee selects all of the award winners. For approximately three months from January to March, two teachers are announced as winners every Friday on the Morning Magic Show of the radio station Magic 98.3. Each winning teacher will be honored at an awards banquet and receive gifts, banquet tickets, and a Class Award.
At PHS, Elia teaches Python Programming, AP Computer Science, and AP Statistics and advises multiple clubs. She supervises the computer lab for two hours each day and also acts as the coordinator of technology for the PHS Adult School.
Elia said she is constantly motivated by students to teach well and adjust her approach if necessary. “My two main motivators to work with students [are] to observe how they interact socially on an academic level and also how they use their creativity to solve problems,” she said.
